Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is a 2013 Japanese animated film directed by Masahiro Hosoda. The film was loosely based on the Toriyama's manga, Dragon Ball, which was previously featured in an anime series that aired from 1989 to 1996. It also marks the series' 20th anniversary since its debut in Japan. The movie premiered in Japan on March 30, 2013 at #1 in box office charts and it has made over $5 million worldwide so far. Although this is a new release, it contains some prequel material to previous anime films with retelling of events up until the beginning of the manga adaptation in 1987. The film was created to commemorate the Dragon Ball franchise's 20th anniversary. According to a 2013 interview with the director, "Battle of Gods" is a continuation of the original manga and takes place after Goku defeats Boo in the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament. In this movie, an evil alien named Bills appears from a space ship that resembles a grandfather clock, seeking out Goku as a foe worthy of his power. The film also features cameos from characters in the original manga that were not featured in its anime adaptation, as well as characters new to both mediums. The movie begins with Shenlong warning the inhabitants of Earth about an impending crisis that will be arriving soon. He begins to blow his horn, but stops as Krillin and Gohan come to him. They ask Shenlong what is going on and he tells them that an evil person will be arriving soon to Earth. He states that he will use his powers to protect the planet, but asks them for their help in fighting the threat. The newcomers are reluctant at first, but Gohan accepts the challenge after Krillin reminds him what happened to Goku. Meanwhile, Bills enters his spaceship, with the Earth's population watching on-screen through televisions. As Bills is heading towards Earth, Shenlong blows his horn again and does not fall off of his own accord this time. Bills does not know that he has been tricked. On Earth, Gohan and his friends are training. Bills walks out of his spaceship and sees Kale, who is looking at the Elder Kai's computer, and plans to attack her. However, she stops him with her sword, which he realizes is capable of destroying space itself. He challenges Kale to a fight on Earth instead of destroying Earth by himself. Bills assumes that Kale will agree to the fight after he makes clear just how powerful he is. The others are amazed at how strong Bills is compared to Kale's abilities, which include flying through the air with just the power of her ki and creating lighting bolts from her hands. However, Kale reveals that she is not as strong as she initially seemed, and Bills destroys her. Goku arrives on Earth with Shenlong to do battle with him. Shenlong says that Goku has the power to defeat him, but he needs to be in Super Saiyan God form if he is going to have a chance of winning. The others are shocked by this revelation, except for Vegeta who says that he has always been a step ahead of Goku. He then transforms into a Super Saiyan God himself. Goku then transforms into one as well, just in time for Bills to attack them both with a massive energy blast from his finger. The beam engulfs the entire planet and all of its inhabitants. cfa1e77820
